The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is being driven to extinction. You can help!
Hawksbill sea turtles are one of the most endangered sea turtle populations on the planet—only a few hundred nesting hawksbills remain. The population is not likely to persist without coordinated conservation actions directed at protecting nesting females and ensuring the maximum number of hatchlings reach the sea.
Research actions spearheaded by the Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (ICAPO) have led to identification of the primary hawksbill nesting sites in the region. ICAPO's projects protect the overwhelming majority of these turtles and their offspring in their key habitats. Continued efforts to protect hawksbills and their nests are vital for recovery of this critical endangered species.
GreaterGood.org partners with ICAPO, and with your help, ICAPO will work at the six primary nesting sites to ensure protection of more than 95% of the hawksbill nests laid in the entire region. In doing so they will maximize the number of eggs that result in hatchlings, which will ensure an increase to the overall hawksbill population and send it on a path to recovery. By working with local coastal community members and providing them with training and a sustainable source of income as project staff, they will be established as long-term protectors of the species. Data collected on nesting female turtles, hatchlings and nest performance will help to better understand hawksbill biology and life-history, and improve management of the species and their habitats.
You can help. Just $50 will ensure a hawksbill nest will be saved and that the population will continue.
The Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (ICAPO), a project of The Ocean Foundation, was formally established in July 2008 to promote the recovery of hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific. The Ocean Foundation (501(c)3) is a unique community foundation with a mission to support, strengthen, and promote those organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of ocean environments around the world.
