Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Bahamas as a catastrophic Category 5 Hurricane on Sunday, September 1st and stalled over the islands for 3 days – leaving Grand Bahama and Abaco Islands utterly decimated. At least 45 people are dead, hundreds are missing, and an estimated 70,000 people are homeless. Harrowing stories of survival and loss continue to grip national headlines. An estimated 60% of structures were destroyed on the islands that was described as ‘inhabitable’ and has the appearance of a war zone.
GreaterGood.org’s Disaster Response Team and Rescue Bank continue to work around the clock to deliver life-saving supplies for people and pets in need. In partnership with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the first plane of animal first aid and trauma supplies arrived in Nassau, Bahamas was immediately transferred to Abaco where a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit is establishing, stocked with supplies needed to support veterinary services, animal search and rescue, logistics, and emergency animal sheltering. We anticipate a flight with our partners on Wednesday that will transfer in life-saving supplies and return to the U.S with animal evacuees from the Grand Bahama Humane Society, where the survivors of the fatal flooding have been waiting to find their forever homes. This flight will bring some space for the staff that is reeling with catastrophic loss and grappling with the other urgent animal needs on the islands.
Dorian also caused massive flooding along the Atlantic coast. GreaterGood.org continues to work with shelters to bring in animal food and other care supplies for evacuees and shelter animals. Residents along the coast are still reeling from hurricanes Irma, Florence, and Michael. Small and large animal owners have not yet had a chance to get their footing and supporting their need to feed their animals and keep them enriched is paramount.
The road to recovery in the Bahamas will take years. We're working closely with our international partners to provide humanitarian and animal aid on the islands.
